Program Description

The objective of the CELTA program is to provide you with the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to be a successful English teacher in Canada or abroad. In the CELTA course you will:

  • Learn the principles of effective teaching

Students who successfully complete this program and have a degree may apply for TESL Canada’s Professional Standard Level One certification.

Entry Requirements
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a standard of education that would allow you to enter university in your country (high school).
  • Have an advanced level of English to teach at a range of levels (CEFR C1-C2+, CEFR C2, TOEFL 102, IELTS 7.5 or higher).
  • Undergraduate degree recommended.

*To be able to apply for TESL Canada certification, students must meet the education (BA or equivalent) and language requirements (iBT 101, IELTS 7) as specified by TESL Canada. www.tesl.ca.

If an applicant fails to meet the minimum requirements, they cannot be waived by either the institution or the student.

Program Overview

In your CELTA course, you will cover five main topics:

  • Learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context
  • Language analysis and awareness
  • Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
  • Planning and resources for different contexts
  • Developing teaching skills and professionalism

The CELTA course structure includes:

  • Input sessions: Learn the principles of effective teaching and gain a range of practical skills for teaching English to adult learners.
  • Teaching practice: Get six hours of supervised and assessed teaching practice at two different levels.
  • Feedback on teaching practice: Personalized oral and written feedback on your teaching practice.
  • Lesson planning: Guidance in planning your lessons for the teaching practice.
  • Tutorial support: Individualized tutorials and assistance to help you map your progress.
  • Observation: Learn from observing your peers and experienced teachers at one of the largest English schools in Canada.
  • Assignments: Four written assignments to reinforce the theory behind the practical aspects of teaching.

How You Will Be Assessed

You will be assessed throughout the course as there is no final examination. An external assessor, appointed by Cambridge English Language Assessment, moderates each course and to complete the program successfully, you must pass two assessments – Teaching Practice, which includes 6 hours of teaching and Written Assignments. There are three passing grades:

  • Pass 'A'
  • Pass 'B'
  • Pass
